Can I Use Hotspot (Tethering) with a Travel eSIM?
Yes — most travel eSIM plans support tethering. Here's how to enable a hotspot on iPhone and Android, and how to avoid burning through your data allowance.
Tethering means using your phone's mobile data connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices — such as a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. Most travel eSIM plans support this, though it depends on the local network and your device — and there are a few things to bear in mind.
Short answer
Yes — tethering works with travel eSIM plans. Check your plan's terms at purchase — the vast majority allow it. When you tether, data used by connected devices counts against your eSIM plan's allowance, so a tethered laptop will drain your data significantly faster than a phone alone.
Check your plan
Tethering support depends on the local network and your device, and some networks restrict it. If hotspot use is essential for your trip, ask Voyevia or contact support before you buy.
Enable hotspot on iPhone
Open Settings → Personal Hotspot
Alternatively, go to Settings → Cellular → Personal Hotspot.
Make sure the eSIM is selected as the data line
Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and confirm your Voyevia eSIM is selected.
Toggle 'Allow Others to Join' on
Your Wi-Fi hotspot is now live. Note the Wi-Fi password shown on screen.
Connect other devices
On the laptop or tablet, search for Wi-Fi networks and connect using the password shown.
Enable hotspot on Android (Samsung / Pixel)
Open Settings → Connections (or Network & Internet)
Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, or search 'Hotspot' in Settings.
Tap Mobile Hotspot
Enable the toggle. Set a network name and password if prompted.
Confirm data source
Make sure your Voyevia eSIM is set as the active data SIM in SIM Manager settings.
Connect other devices
Search for the hotspot name on other devices and connect using your password.
Data-saving tips when tethering
- Tethering a laptop can use 500MB–2GB per hour depending on activity — choose a larger plan if you intend to tether regularly
- Disable auto-updates on connected laptops before tethering — Windows and macOS tend to download updates on new connections
- Use the hotspot for browsing and messaging, not for streaming video — a 10-minute video can use 500MB+
- Set a data limit on your phone if available (Android) to get an alert before your allowance runs out

Frequently asked questions
No — data used via the hotspot comes from your eSIM plan's allowance at the same rate. There is no extra fee, but the data will be deducted faster.
On most modern smartphones with dual SIM, yes. Your phone can handle a call on one SIM while the eSIM provides data for tethering at the same time.
Some local networks restrict hotspot use under their carrier agreements. If tethering is a priority, ask Voyevia or contact support before you buy to check your destination.
Yes. Broadcasting a hotspot uses additional radio power. Keep your phone plugged in or use a battery pack when tethering for extended periods.
